This Sunday, Sporting travel to Sclessin for the clasico against Standard. Two days later (24/10/23) marks the 30th anniversary of a fine 0-3 victory on the banks of the River Maas. All three goals were scored by legend Luc Nilis, who scored no less than 25 goals for the Mauve et Blanc that season. In all competitions, the Limburger has faced the Rouches 18 times, with a fine record of thirteen wins, four draws and just one defeat.
After a solid start by Standard, Lucky Luc opended the scoring on Pär Zetterberg's cross, which was deflected by Danny Boffin. Following a beautiful assist by Philippe Albert, Luc Nilis doubled the lead with a subtle chip. In the second half, the number 9 benefited from a pass from Johnny Bosman to beat Jacky Munaron, Sporting's former goalkeeper, for a third time. A victory that launched Sporting on the road to their 23rd title. A second consecutive title that would become a hat-trick the following season, still under the guidance of Dutch coach Johan Boskamp
