Defeat at Union

The Mauves lost 2-0 on Friday evening at Joseph Marien Stadium in the opening game of the Jupiler Pro League season 2023-2024. Anderlecht will have to show a different side of their game next weekend against Antwerp in their first home match.

Maxime Dupé had to be aware already at the start of the match on an attempt by Loïc Lapoussin. The home team dominated in the first half. They continued to threaten with shots from Senne Lynen and Kevin Mac Allister (well blocked by Jan Vertonghen), but especially with an attempt from Bart Nieuwkoop that hit the post. But after half an hour, Dennis Eckert opened the score after a pass from Loïc Lapoussin. RSCA answered only with Anders Dreyer's shot going wide, but it was Union who almost doubled their lead as Dennis Eckert's header hit the crossbar.

In the second half, the exchanges were more even and the duels fiercer, but the opportunities played were fairly non-existent. Only after twenty minutes did Killian Sardella come into action and forced Anthony Moris to dive for a cross from Kasper Dolberg. On the other side, Koki Machida's header missed the target. Benito Raman's late shot failed to disturb the opposing goalkeeper. In injury time, the referee pointed to the penalty spot for a handball from Jan Vertonghen. Cameron Puertas ended the tension. Sporting never really got back into the game and left the Duden Park empty-handed.
