‘Our story is not over yet’. The message from our fans to Jan Vertonghen was loud and clear. Our captain is staying for one more season.
Jan retired from the national team after the past European Championship at the age of 37 after 157 games in the Red Devils' shirt. His contract with RSC Anderlecht also expired on 30 June. All the while, both club and player were left with the feeling that it was too early for a definitive ending of the proud record international’s career.
As our leader in the back line, our captain and mentor to our young talents, Jan proved his value to the club over the past two seasons. A story that will now continue for one more season.
Jan Vertonghen:
"I clearly wasn't ready to say goodbye to RSC Anderlecht yet. I personally feel completely at home here and I have also felt the appreciation of the fans and of the people within the club. That has convinced me to add another year. I look forward to sharing the dressing room with this group of players for another season and using my experience to help the club move forward."
CEO Sports Jesper Fredberg:
"Jan has been a crucial part of Anderlecht over the past two years. You can just see his passion and the belief he has in the project. By keeping Jan with us for another year, we create continuity. And that is exactly what we are looking for now; it is important for us to build on the team that is there.”
“I like to think of Jan as a fighter and a gentleman. As a footballer, he leaves his heart out on the pitch. But off the pitch, he’s curious, caring and always there to help. He’s a great ambassador of our values and for football in general. So we’re honoured to have him one more season with us.”
