On Thursday night, Sporting travelled to the Duden Park for the quarter-finals of the Croky Cup. There was only one change to last weekend's starting eleven at OH Leuven: Louis Patris (injured) was replaced as right-back by Mohamed Bouchouari, playing his first game for the club. Unfortunately, his first start turned into a defeat and elimination from the Belgian Cup, despite an hour of numerical superiority.
Kasper Dolberg was the first to take his chance, but his effort was too weak to trouble Anthony Moris. Moments later, Kevin Rodriguez almost benefited from a poor move by our goalkeeper, but Mats Rits intervened at the last moment. The home team dominated possession and opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark through Loic Lapoussin, after a pass from Noah Sadiki. Union then found themselves down a man when Kevin Mac Allister was shown a red card for colliding with Kasper on his way to goal. The ball possession was reversed. However, Ludwig Augustinsson and Anders Dreyer could not finish Anderlecht's only two good attacks.
After the resumption, it was again Kasper Dolberg who first showed danger, but his header was not good enough. Kevin Rodriguez replied, Kasper Schmeichel could easily save. Anthony Moris, however, had to make a save to keep Anders Dreyer off the equaliser. After an hour of play, Zeno Debast committed a foul on Kevin Rodriguez and the Ecuadorian converted the penalty unerringly. With a quarter of the time remaining, the match was interrupted for a while due to the throwing of cups on the pitch. Despite substitutions by Brian Riemer, the Mauves could not really threaten in the last quarter of an hour. Anders Dreyer did make it 2-1 in injury time, but that goal came too late. Final score of the cup match: 2-1.
