On Sunday afternoon, the Purple and White traveled to Leuven for the 16th matchday of the Jupiler Pro League. After an intense and hard-fought game, Sporting unfortunately had to settle for a draw.
Early in the match, Théo Leoni played the ball to Mario Stroeykens, who successfully put the ball back to Kasper Dolberg. The Danish striker forced goalkeeper Tobe Leysen into a fine save. Shortly after, Thomas Foket had to intervene at the other end. With an excellent defensive action, he prevented OHL forward Hamza Mendyl from opening the score. A little later, Colin Coosemans made a save on a powerful strike towards the corner by Thibault Vlietinck. Moussa Ndiaye had RSCA’s best chance of the first half. After a rebound following a set-piece, the Senegalese player fired a hard shot but struck straight at the Leuven goalkeeper. Stefan Mitrovic mirrored him, with his attempt also landing safely in Coosemans' hands. Just before halftime, Mats Rits tried his luck, but his shot was also stopped by Tobe Leysen. Anderlecht dominated possession in the first half but failed to create significant scoring opportunities. Halftime score: 0-0.
In the first fifteen minutes of the second half, it was Purple and White who made their presence felt with attempts from Théo Leoni and Kasper Dolberg, but both efforts missed the target. Around the hour mark, Yari Verschaeren and Nilson Angulo came on as substitutes for Théo Leoni and Francis Amuzu. Shortly after, Nilson Angulo set up Mario Stroeykens in an excellent position to shoot. Stroeykens' low drive was parried by Tobe Leysen, who had to stretch fully to make the save. With fifteen minutes remaining, David Hubert brought fresh legs onto the pitch with Luis Vazquez and Tristan Degreef, who replaced Kasper Dolberg and Anders Dreyer. However, Sporting failed to produce further goal threats. On the contrary, just like in the first half, Thomas Foket saved his team with a crucial intervention on a Leuven attempt. During their visit to Den Dreef, RSCA ultimately had to settle for a point.
