FC RFS 1-1 RSCA

FC RFS 1-1 RSCA

On the fourth matchday of the league phase of the UEFA Europa League, purple and white had to settle for a draw in Latvia. Mario Stroeykens opened the scoring just before the end of the match, but FC RFS didn’t give up and managed to equalize in the final moments. Ten out of twelve points for Sporting.

A goal by the home team was quickly disallowed due to offside. Initially, it was the Latvians who applied the pressure. However, that momentum soon shifted, and possession was largely in favor of purple and white. After twenty minutes, the Brussels team found the back of the net through a quick counterattack led by Francis Amuzu and Tristan Degreef, easily finished off by Kasper Dolberg. However, the goal was ruled out by the VAR due to an earlier foul by the Dane. Our players maintained control of the ball in the first half but without creating any real threats. Just before halftime, it was Colin Coosemans who had to intervene on a header by Haruna Njie. The halftime score: 0-0.

Immediately after the break, Cédric Kouadio found himself one-on-one with Colin Coosemans, who was not caught off guard by the RFS striker. Sporting struggled to create chances. David Hubert decided to make some changes after 60 minutes, bringing on Mario Stroeykens, Samuel Edozie, and Luis Vazquez in place of Francis Amuzu, Tristan Degreef, and Kasper Dolberg. A good pass from Mario Stroeykens quickly set up Anders Dreyer in front of the goal, but his shot missed the target. Moments later, a cross from Mario found Samuel Edozie, but the Englishman also couldn’t score. The home team's goalkeeper was forced to make a fine save on a shot from Anders Dreyer.

After several attempts to set up his teammates to score, Mario Stroeykens took matters into his own hands just minutes before the final whistle: he blasted an unstoppable shot from outside the box into the top corner. However, the Latvians didn’t give up and managed to equalize in injury time. After Colin Coosemans initially parried a shot against the post, Moussa N'Diaye unfortunately deflected the ball into his own net: 1-1, the final score in this European encounter in Riga.
