On Friday, Sporting found out which eight opponents it will face in the Europa league. Now we also know when that will happen. The Mauves kick off the league phase at Lotto Park against Hungarian champion Ferencváros on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 9 p.m. Discover the full calendar here.
The formats of European competitions have been massively reformed this season. Just like the Champions League, the group phase of the Europa League has become a league phase, with 36 teams involved. Each club will therefore face eight different opponents: four at home, and four away. The league's standings will be based on the results of the 36 teams.
At the end of the eight league games (the last two of which will be played in January 2025), the top eight ranked clubs qualify for the last 16. The clubs ranked 9th to 24th will play a knockout play-off to try and join them. Clubs ranked lower than 24th will be eliminated from the competition.
