Purple and White took the three points against Cercle on Wednesday night. A good result that keeps Sporting in the lead. But it was a triumph that was overshadowed by the loss of one of our loyal supporters.
As usual, Cercle Brugge put our team under pressure from the start. We had to wait about 10 minutes for the first goal attempt by Anders Dreyer, whose shot went wide. Both teams lost a fair amount of ball possession after that. Apart from shots by Zeno Debast and Mario Stroeykens, there were no major chances at first. Until the half-hour mark. That's when Théo Leoni dribbled his way through the opponent's defense and beat Warleson for the first time. 1-0. Just two minutes later, Kasper Dolberg put Anders Dreyer alone in front of goal to double the lead. Unfortunately, the Danish winger had to make way for Francis Amuzu injured moments later. Amuzu created some dangerous moments immediately, but his cross flew just wide. The score at half-time was 2-0.
Kasper Schmeichel was replaced injured by Colin Coosemans at the start of the second half. It was our second goalkeeper's very first official game in our colours. After Sporting had dominated the game for about 10 minutes, Théo Leoni took advantage of a mistake by goalkeeper Warleson to make it 3-0. The two coaches then made a series of changes, no doubt with an eye on the game they will play against each other again next Sunday at 4pm at the Jan Breydel Stadium. Moussa N'Diaye made his return at the end of the match after a long absence through injury. After that, chances were scarce. The three points stayed in the capital.
