RSC Anderlecht hosted Cercle Brugge at Lotto Park on Sunday evening. Four new names started in the starting line-up compared to the European midweek match: the suspended Amadou Diawara was replaced by Kristian Arnstad, Killian Sardella, Majeed Ashimeru and Islam Slimani also started the match. Sporting won 2-0 after a plethora of chances and a double from Islam Slimani.
RSCA started the match strongly. Amir Murillo sent Islam Slimani deep, who laid the ball off to Anders Dreyer, but the visiting goalkeeper managed to save. Not much the ball wehnt in: a corner was played short by Verschaeren and Dreyer, and Islam Slimani headed the ball into the net on the ensuing cross. Then the goal chances followed in quick succession, but the ball just did not go in. First a shot by Arnstad was blocked, Yari Verschaeren could not decide either. At the other end, things also got hot for a moment when Avase Ueda struck Bart Verbruggen on Kevin Denkey's cross. For Sporting, the chances kept coming after that. Anders Dreyer's effort was miraculously saved, Islam Slimani just failed to get a ball in from close range, and Amir Murillo and Slimani too could not score on a sharp cross from Francis Amuzu. 1-0 thus at half-time, though it could have been more.
After half-time, the trend of the first half continued. Goalkeeper Warlerson repelled well on a kick by Anders Dreyer. Kristian Arnstad hit the bar with a free kick. Moments later Warlerson again, he caught a header from Slimani. Sporting dominated the match, although the stadium was shocked for a moment when a ball suddenly came into the feet of Denkey who tapped it against the post. After that, purple and white took over the game completely again and Sporting saw themselves rewarded for all their efforts. Slimani, again he, got a deflected ball into his feet and doubled the score. The visitors still finished the match with 10, but that was just a footnote in an otherwise positive match for RSCA. Three points, an important victory as the end of the regular league approaches.
