Welcome back, Leander

Leander Dendoncker

Back where it all began. Leander Dendoncker joins us on loan from Aston Villa for one season to strengthen the midfield. Both clubs also agreed an option to buy.

Almost exactly 15 years ago, Leander Dendoncker took his first steps at RSC Anderlecht. From Passendale in West Flanders, Leander moved to the metropolis to join the purple-white youth academy in 2009. His first-team debut followed in 2013, when he was came on during the Super Cup win against KRC Genk.

From the ‘14-’15 season, Dendoncker became a regular within the first team. In the ‘16-’17 season, ultimate glory for a true Sportingboy followed: Dendoncker won the league title with Anderlecht. A year after, his performances - including his memorable goal against Manchester United in the Europa League - earned him a transfer to the Premier League.

After 171 games in the purple-and-white shirt, Leander moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Also at the Wolves, Leander grew into a stronghold in the midfield and played 159 games in the Premier League. After four seasons, the midfielder moved to Aston Villa, having played the last six months on loan with Napoli.

Leander is, of course, also an experienced player with the Red Devils. He collected 33 caps with the national team and played at the 2018 World Cup, the 2020 Euros and the 2022 World Cup, among others.

Leander Dendoncker:

“It feels very special to return to RSC Anderlecht. I played here from the age of 14 to 23, so this is really my home after all. It also feels like a good moment for me to take this step and help the club achieve its goals this season. I can't wait to be back on the pitch and I'm looking forward to seeing the fans again.”

CEO Sports Jesper Fredberg:

“We’re really pleased to welcome Leander back to the club. With Leander, we get someone in with Premier League experience, who knows the club, fits well to our project and most importantly: he has a desire to achieve a lot with us. Leander can play different positions for us, which can help us a lot in the upcoming season. I’m sure this will be a great adventure for both Leander and the club.”
